Hurricane Gustav Shuts Down New Orleans and Gay Southern Decadence

Southern Decadence was just getting started and the Mayor shut down the city. 25,000 – 30,000  tourists fled the city Saturday, when the mayor called for a mandatory evacuation. The Mayor also asked organizers of Southern Decadence to shut down all festivities.

As of now, there is no discussion of refunds for tickets to cancelled parties. But in the post-mortem, expect some agonized discussions about whether to continue the party next year.

While it has helped get a troubled city back on its feet, it also takes place during hurricane season. And it may be more difficult to attract out-of-towners in wake of Katrina and now, Gustav.
