Historic Castles of Europe
Skibo Castle in Scotland. With prices ranging from $1800-$2000 per night (for non-members). It’s an ‘exclusive’ members only club. The annual membership fee is around £4000 and each night spent on the estate costs around £600, including certain activities and meals. The castle hosted Madonna’s wedding to Guy Ritchie in 2000.
Ashford Castle in Ireland can run you $350 – $2000 per night. Ask anyone in Ireland to name the best castle hotel — in a country with as many castles as shamrocks — and they’ll cite Ashford without hesitation. The 700-year-old estate, opened to guests in 1939, is one of the oldest castle hotels in the world. A room with a view? Ashford defines it, perched as it is on the shores of Loch Corrib, Ireland’s second-largest lake.
HOTEL PODEWILS in Krag is a must see at $75-$125 per night. The largest 15th-century knight’s castle in Pomerania and Poland’s only castle built over water, the “Castle of Flowers” is perched on oak piles like those supporting the canal buildings of Venice. The stylish interiors and the use of modern technological solutions link together tradition, modern facilities and convenience.
Gay Tokyo
8 Million people! Suffering for more than a decade from Japan’s self-induced economic slump, Tokyo has seen much of its luster worn away by a recession seemingly without end. Art museums and performance spaces, once the crowning jewels of any serious department store, have turned into tired craft supply shops or now exhibit bins filled with last season’s unsold dishware. Once splendid designer boutiques openly hawk second-hand goods and hair scrunchies in sad sign-of-the-times sidewalk sales.
But there are also positive changes resulting from the flatlining economy. Bars are more mixed and friendly for foreign visitors (they need your business). English signage is now in common use, even on drink menus. With falling rental rates, savvy club owners have taken over neighboring venues, doubling or tripling the size of their once tiny establishments.
With prices having barely risen over the last dozen years, no tipping, no added taxes, and the dollar currently soaring against the yen, Tokyo is suddenly more affordable than New York, Paris or even Los Angeles! Taxis, once pure luxury rides — with their lace doilies and white-gloved drivers who open the door for you — have become a suddenly affordable, comfortable alternative to packed trains. Any tourist in their right mind should take advantage of this golden opportunity to discover the world wonders in the heart of this fascinating, and friendlier-than-ever Imperial city. Tokyo may never be this cheap again!
Utopia Asia is a great resource for the traveler heading to Tokya. Bacchus also has aguide to Tokyo, but it’s a little out-dated. And recently, Gay.com did a big spread on Tokyo. – In this cultural mix of underground and obvious, finding Tokyo‘s big, gay party is all about knowing where to look. Don’t lose heart if it doesn’t catch your eye immediately: whether tourist, ex-pat lifer, or native, first-timers to the gay scene here always start out lost.
Nestled in Shinjuku, a youth-saturated neighborhood, the Ni-Chome district is the beating gay heart of Tokyo. Books Rose (2-14-11, Shinjuku;) is almost the only life sign during working hours and perfect for collecting intel on upcoming parties and other LGBT activities. (Note: The address “2-14-11 Shinjuku” means second district of Shinjuku, 14th block, 11th building).
There are more than 200 (mostly very small) gay bars in Shinjuku Ni-Chome alone.
After 8 p.m., Ni-Chome starts pumping neon and queers start letting loose. This micro-neighborhood is packed with cozy watering holes where amiable proprietors make matches and encourage friendships between patrons and newcomers.
Arty Farty (2/F 33 Kyutei Bld; 2-11-7 Shinjuku, 2nd fl; www.Arty-Farty.net) is a popular last stop for late-night youth. The entrance hand stamp confers free admission to the owners’ twin bar nearby, the equally gaijin-friendly Annex (1/F Futami Bld; 2-14-11 Shinjuku).
Most young people speak some English and love to chat, but knowing Japanese helps a lot, especially with older folks, who remain more “understated.”
The heightened privacy standards in Japan make it a rarity for hotels to bar same-sex bed-sharing, which is great since LGBT-specific accommodations are impossible to find.
Two other interesting options are traditional tatami and futon hotels or ultra-modern capsule hotels — temptingly cheap, but eerily like when Bruce Willis slept on that space cruise in “The 5th Element.”
The closest capsule to Ni-Chome is the men-only Shinjuku Kuyakusho-mae Capsule Hotel (1-2-5 Kabuki-cho, Shinjuku-ku; www.Ars-Shinjuku.com) in nearby Kabuki-cho, the straight red-light district. Pods are one per customer.
The Tokyo Pride Parade is the biggest event of its kind in Japan. Last year’s event drew more than 3,800 spectators and participants, and more than 200 volunteers helped to make it a success. The people marching in the parade around Shibuya and Harajuku represented all facets of Japan’s LGBT community and many were in amazingly original costumes.

The Wildest Restaurants in the World!
TALK ABOUT DINING AL FRESCO!
This is too wild! “Dinner in the Sky” is a Brussels based restaurant that serves dinner for up to 22 people… 150 feet in the air!
This is a unique event meant for anyone who wishes to transform an ordinary meal or meeting into a magical moment that will leave a lasting impression on their guests!
The specially-designed table and chairs are lifted by a crane. Dinner anywhere in Belgium will set you back almost 8 thousand euros; other locations are also available.
Remember, you must wear your seat belt, and don’t drop your fork! And please use the bathroom before leaving the ground.
Check out the Dinner in the Sky website for more photos and video!
“Cabbages and Condoms” is a chain of restaurants in Thailand. There are condoms on the walls and pictures of condoms printed on the carpets. Instead of after-dinner mints, patrons are offered a bowl of condoms at the counter. Condoms and sex toys are a major part of the decor, hanging from ceilings, embedded in tables, affixed to lamps and imitating table flowers.
As one of the most unique restaurants in Metropolitan Bangkok, the Cabbages and Condoms (C&C) Restaurant has attracted international attention.
Conveniently located near one of Bangkok’s main business districts, C&C is very popular among local and foreign clients.
“Our restaurant was conceptualized in part to promote better understanding and acceptance of family planning and to generate income to support various development activities of the Population and Community Development Association (PDA)
Profits from the restaurants go to support the Population and Community Development Association (PDA).”
Creator and owner Mechai Viravaidya was recognized by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with a $1 million award for confronting “taboo subjects like sex and HIV/AIDS directly in order to save lives.”
The funds were used by Mr. Viravaidya, the chairman of Population and Community Development Association (or simply “condom king,” depending on who you ask), to promote birth control, AIDS prevention and other health issues in more than 50 countries. Almost 3,000 people work for his private group.
Have you ever heard of people eating out of a bathroom toilet and having great fun? A restaurant named Marton Theme Restaurant, in Kaohsiung (Taiwan) has a toilet theme and is a great hit among people.
The restaurant has a bathroom decor, with colorful toilet seat being the standard chairs at the restaurant. It also serves food in plates and bowls shaped like western loo seats and Japanese “squat” toilets. Customers sits by a tables converted from a bathtub with a glass cover while looking at a wall decorated with neon-lit faucets and urinals turned into lamps.
The restaurant is named after the Chinese word “Matong” for toilet and is doing really well.
The owner Eric Wang says “We not only sell food but also laughter. The food is just as good as any restaurant but we offer additional fun. Most customers think the more disgusting and exaggerated (the restaurant is), the funnier the dining experience is.”
The meals are cheaply priced with a meal set including soup and ice cream costs from 150 to 250 Taiwan dollars ($6 – $10).
How about dinner in Prison?
If you think getting into some of Paris’s hottest restaurants seems hard, then you obviously haven’t eaten at Fortezza Medicea in Volterra, Italy.
Diners at the high-security prison restaurant (you read that right) have to submit to a background check and receive a security clearance from Italy’s Department of Justice.
Serenaded by Bruno, a pianist doing life for murder, the clientele eat inside a deconsecrated chapel set behind the 60ft high walls, watch towers, searchlights and security cameras of the daunting 500-year-old Fortezza Medicea, near Pisa. Guards stand watch as sommelier Santolo, who’s serving 24 years for murder, pours Chianti.
If you can look past the paper plates and the plastic cutlery, the Southern Italian dishes from Puglia, Sicily, and Naples are rather delicious.
Under the watchful eye of armed prison warders, a 20-strong team of chefs, kitchen hands and waiters prepares 120 covers nightly for diners who have all undergone strict security checks.
Tables are booked up weeks in advance. Allow about 2 months to book a table. Dinner runs about $35.
DINE UNDER WATER in Maldives. The first-ever undersea restaurant in the world was been introduced at the Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa in 2007. Ithaa (which is pronounced “eet-ha” and means “pearl” in the language of the Maldives, Dhivehi) sits five meters below the waves of the Indian Ocean, surrounded by a vibrant coral reef and encased in clear acrylic, offering diners 270 degrees of panoramic underwater views.
This innovative restaurant is the first of its kind in the world, and is part of a US $5 million re-build of Rangalifinolhu Island, one of the twin islands that make up Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa. This re-build includes the construction of 79 of the most luxurious beach villas in the country as well as the Spa Village, a self-contained, over-water “resort-within-a-resort” consisting of a spa, restaurant and 21 villas.
If a breathtaking view is not enough…how about NO VIEW. The first dark restaurant, WHALE INSIDE, in Asia opened in 2006. This restaurant, located in Beijing, China, has its interior painted completely black. Customers are greeted by a brightly lit entrance hall, where they choose from several preset menus, which can include chicken soup with shiitake mushrooms, fried shrimp and sautéed noodles. They are escorted by waiters wearing night vision goggles into the pitch dark dining room to help them find their seats. Flashlights, mobile phones and even luminous watches are prohibited while in this area.
The meal will be taken in this environment with the complete loss of vision. By starving one’s sense, your other senses are stimulated to full alert “all so the theory goes” and your food will taste like it’s never tasted before. In case you are wondering about the washrooms, they are all brightly lit.
Bon Appetit!
Gay Capetown South Africa
CAPE TOWN provides water, culture and beauty!
People call it the San Francisco of South Africa.
The oldest South African city is unarguably the most beautiful with its endless features. Moutains, water, sandy beaches, vineyards and some gorgeous people!
Regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world:- ‘heaven at the tip of Africa’ and voted as one of the top 5 Gay travel destinations, Cape Town is a cosmopolitan city to be seen!
The most popular time of year to visit is December thru February when the temps are 80’s in the day and 60’s at night. March thru May is not quite as busy and cool off a bit but still very nice. DECEMBER is The Mother City Queer Project Festival – Born out of a much smaller event that was held back in 1994, the annual MCQPF is one of biggest gay and lesbian events in the city. As with many pride marches around the world, flamboyant costumes are the order of the day and the bigger, brighter and shinier the better. The festival is hosted at the city’s Ratanga Junction Theme Park which is transformed into a party playground with up to eight different stages and dance arenas. A great celebration of South African sexual diversity, this is a party not to be missed. Attracts about 10,000 people.
There is also a big Pride Festival late February – early March.
OUT IN AFRICA, the GLBT film Festival happens mid-September.
White sand and breath-taking views…There are a few gay popular beachs; Clifton 3 & Graaffs Pool, which is about 15 minutes outside the city. Clifton 3 has lots of muscle boys. Very hot! Right next door is a straight section. Actually many of the straight guys are just as fit as the gay guys! However, you see more gays in lycra and more straights in those awful board shorts that hide everything.
In SeaPoint, Graaffs pool is more of a nude sun bathing, men only, platform; with a gay mens and straight mens section.
Sandy Bay Beach, is about a 40-minute trip from the city. And a little hike when you get there. Known for its natural beauty, it’s very secluded. Nudist beach.
– Take your sunscreen!
Just north of the city center, and west of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront along a street called De Waterkant is the “gay village.” You’ll find everything from cozy neighborhood bars to big nightclubs (known for a wild nightlife!) to eclectic restaurants.
A hotspot for gay culture, Cape Town boasts a liberal attitude and is very accepting of the Gay community which is large and growing.
Café Manhattan is probably one of the oldest gay venues, it is a relaxed bar and restaurant, also might want to try The Bronx, a popular action bar. For the more theatrically inclined, On Broadway offers regular performances by popular entertainers.
Just over 4 million people make up Cape Town and 11 different languages are spoken here! People are very friendly and have a reputation for hospitality. Whether you want to go shark diving, paragliding, jet ski, absailing or just hang out on the beach and man watch….Cape Town is a fun time!

Gay Paris – Don’t Fall For the Brass Ring Scam!
My partner and I just got back from the very beautiful, very unfriendly Paris! We had been warned prior to leaving about pick pockets.
Tourists are targeted by scam and rip-off artists everywhere in Europe. If you know the games (spilling the mustard, bus 64 in Rome, and so on), you’re less likely to be a victim. By sharing the latest scams (and learning from each others’ mistakes) we’ll all travel more safely.
Remember, pickpocketing attempts throughout Europe can be expected unless you wear a moneybelt under your clothing. Smart travelers leave wallets at home and store their credit cards, passport, paper money and rail ticket(s) in a secure moneybelt.
We never had a problem with pick pockets. However, no one warned us about the brass ring scam! On our way walking along the Siene, we met a woman, who was so nice! That should have been our first clue! Because overall, people were not very nice in Paris. She seemed so genuine – a really good actress!
Just as you pass the scammer, they bend down to an empty walkway and the ring suddenly appears in her fingers. – Timing is everything. As my eyes went to the pavement, the ring was already there. She wanted me take it. I must have dropped it she said. I said, no. It was hers to keep! Finders keepers!
She gave me a believable story. In her country she could not possess such a ring. She was not allowed to even talk to men. She said I should keep it. And explained she was looking for work as a cleaning woman – did I know of anywhere she could apply? – I did not need or want a gold band! But the generous heart that I have I gave her $10 Euro and went about my day!
100 feet later, I looked to my partner and said, “You don’t think she has a whole pocketful of those rings do you???” – Sure enough, a few blocks later, we see her daughter scamming somone! Yet, a few blocks further, a young man comes up to us, not nearly as smooth – he must be in training and tried to pull the scam on us. His hand went to the pavement and nothing was there. He clumsily dropped the palmed ring to the pavemtent and picked it up. I show him the ring I had just acquired and told him I already bought one from his mother!
Lots of tourists get punk’d every day! You will find a lot of stories at RICK STEVES. Watch out for “lost tourists” needing directions. The ring scam. The bracelet scam. Wallet and moneybelt ideas. Be informed before you travel.
I think we are pretty smart, pretty aware travelers, but just when you let you guard down, watch out!

Celebrate Gay Pride in Ottawa Canada August 21-30
Ottawa is an open, friendly and welcoming destination for gay and lesbian travelers. Canada’s Capital has an LGBT pedigree that extends back to the first-ever gay and lesbian public demonstration in Canada (1971), and that in recent years included perhaps the most public gay marriage of all time between two gay stars of the TV program The Amazing Race.
Today, Ottawa is home to a proud and active gay and lesbian community with an ever-expanding variety of clubs, organizations, activities and events – including a very boisterous annual Pride Week celebration – that reflects the diversity of the local community.
The centre of gay and lesbian life is the area around Bank Street and Somerset in the downtown core. The growing gaybourhood has shops and bars and is the home base for local institutions serving the LGBT community.
Explore it by day—or by night. But don’t feel you have to limit yourself to one neighbourhood. There are things happening all over. On Sunday evenings, for example, there’s a lesbian coffee club in suburban Barrhaven. You’ll find gays and lesbians all over the city, doing the active things Ottawans do. Check publications such as Capital Xtra for listings and up-to-date information.
CAPITAL PRIDE, Ottawa’s most colorful event, takes place August 21st – 30th, 2009. More than 50,000 people are expected at the week long celebartion!
Highlights of the 2009 festival include:
· The annual and highly-anticipated Capital Pride Parade on August 30, which is historically well-attended by members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, two-spirited and questioning (GLBTTQ) community and their friends and allies;
· The 2009 Capital Pride festival at Ottawa City Hall immediately following the parade, featuring music, entertainment and an information fair;
· New and expanded events including the Pride Family Street Fair, the Diversity Fun Run, Rainbow Party 10, and youth events hosted by the new Capital Pride Youth group (CPY-A set of “Spy’s”).
Capital Pride has geared up with several community partners to bring the community a more diverse set of events, providing something for all demographics of the GLBTTQ community.
Capital Pride also announced that the 2009 Parade Marshal would be long-time community and trans-rights activist Joanne Law. Capital Pride also officially launched its first issue of its new quarterly Capital Pride newsletter, helping the community stay more connected to their Pride committee.
The theme for the 2009 festival, “Capital Pride on the Map”, recognizes the significant place the festival holds in the Ottawa–Gatineau festival season.
The Capital Pride Festival has made leaps and bound throughout its 20-year history, growing to be Canada’s fourth-largest Pride celebration. Also incorporated into the theme Capital Prides new logo, whose purple star is the symbol marking a capital city on a map.
Ottawa is blessed with a natural setting offering boundless opportunities for outdoor recreation. Paved recreational paths welcome cyclists, inline skaters and joggers across the region and on Sunday mornings from May through September, several streets are closed to cars for Sunday Bikedays. The region’s many waterways are ideal for kayaking, canoeing and boating, and the upper Ottawa River offers some of the best whitewater rafting anywhere. And nearby Gatineau Park offers hiking, rock climbing, camping, exciting zip line aerial experiences and more.
Ottawa is also city of museums, galleries, and theatres showcasing the best in Canadian and world culture. 5-Diamond dining, a vast selection of international cuisines, relaxed, casual fare – Ottawa offers restaurants and culinary experiences to suit every palate, with a thriving local culinary scene and local chefs making names for themselves at home and abroad.
Dining districts include the courtyards and outdoor cafés of the historic ByWard Market, great Asian dining along Somerset Street West, Italian along Preston Street, and a mix of culinary treats along Elgin Street, Bank Street and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Ottawa is just a two-hour drive west of Montreal, just a one-hour flight from Toronto and New York City and a two-hour flight from Chicago. Superb air, rail and road connections make Canada’s capital easily accessible.

BEST GAY CITIES New Gay Travel Guide
Top Lesbian Vacation Cities
What’s a girl to do once she’s crossed off San Francisco, New York, West Hollywood, and Portland, and done the Dinah to death?
It’s time to try these off-radar, lesbian hot spots!
Gay travel is often “different for girls.” Does a listing that states “gay-friendly” also mean “lesbian-friendly” or “lesbian-popular”? If accommodations are advertised as “gay/lesbian,” will visiting women find themselves lone ladies in a gay male–dominated, clothing-optional compound? Will female travelers make the unfortunate discovery that accommodations are “lesbian–overly friendly” and find themselves the objects of unwanted interest? Call ahead to potential accommodations and ask about their percentage of lesbian guests. But don’t allow such concerns to limit vacations to the same spots that have lured ladies for decades: a slew of off-radar sapphic spots await.
Asheville, N.C. – Fall colors are at their finest in Asheville, a remarkable artsy Appalachian town of 70,000 where women walk hand-in-hand and art deco, beaux-arts, and neoclassical architecture create an elegant backdrop. The best places to leaf peep in and around “Sheville” are along 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway between Shenandoah National Park and the Great Smoky Mountains or in downtown’s Asheville Botanical Gardens.
Key West, Fla. – If you’re in the mood for a wild week, schedule sojourns south for WomenFest (WomenFest.com, September 8-13, 2009), when 3,000 women stream over 126 miles and 42 bridges down the Florida Keys to the southernmost point in the continental United States. The raucous WomenFest schedule brims with hot events from clothing-optional pool parties to competitive bull riding.
Eugene, Ore. – Boasting a lesbian chorus, lesbian Realtors, a lesbian ballroom dance group, women’s coffee, writing, and hiking groups, and a famed liberal arts university, this college town of 150,000, 100 miles south of Portland, is your destination if you like your women capable of invigorating debate. 2009 saw the University of Oregon’s Women’s and Gender Studies department host the first Lecture in Lesbian Studies.
Madison, Wis. – Another academic hot spot, but also a city with serious political clout, Wisconsin’s capital is the seat of out lesbian representative Tammy Baldwin. The isthmus city (Madison is perched between lakes Mendota and Monona) is a dynamic, welcoming, and active college town of 230,000.
Northampton, Mass. – Home to the women’s liberal arts college Smith (founded 1871) — and to a population of academic dykes — Northampton is a charming college town of 30,000, perfect for those looking for a romantic getaway, wedding, or honeymoon destination. Downtown is a pleasant stroll from Smith’s elegant campus. Cute cafés and intimate restaurants abound. Lesbianville, USA, as the National Enquirer once proclaimed it, is one of the most lesbian-popular towns in the country and boasts a lesbian mayor (Clare Higgins), a lesbian-run LGBT paper, and an array of women-owned businesses.

Gay Weddings in Des Moines Iowa! Let Lamda Weddings Help Make it Perfect!
I DO! Getting There Des Moines is in the middle of the state of Iowa. It is less than a two hour drive from most parts of of Iowa. It is also 2 hours from Minneapolis, Omaha and Kansas City and about 5 hours from Chicago and St Louis. There are many direct flights into Des Moines from 19 cities including Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Memphis, Atlanta, Denver, Los Angeles, etc. Where to Stay When it comes to choosing a place to stay, Des Moines has the usual offerings like the Marriott, Embassy Suites and the Renaissance Savery. However, it also has several quaint bed and breakfasts for those of you who want something a little unique. The Butler House on Grand Avenue is probably the first place to look into. It is an charming and very elegant early 20th century home that was converted to a B&B in 1996. the owners live on the premises and offer genuine Midwestern hospitality. With a limited number of guest rooms advance booking is highly recommended. Another well-appointed B&B in the city is The Cottage on Kingman Ave. There are also several secular locations to hold gay ceremonies in Des Moines and depending on whether you want an outdoor or indoor event, there is a wide choice. Outdoor locales include gorgeous scenic spots in Madison County (known after its famous bridges- yes it is just a 15 minute drive from Des Moines!). Indoor locations for ceremonies also abound, but it is important to book early to get some of the choice ones. Top among these are The Salisbury House, The Temple of Performing Arts and the Renaissance Savery Hotel. For those of you who want a full-scale wedding with an evening sit-down reception and cost is not a consideration, I would recommend a morning ceremony at the Salisbury House and Gardens. It is an early 20th century architectural gem modeled after a 15th century English mansion. You have the option of holding an indoor ceremony or an outdoor one in the gardens behind the estate. An evening reception can be held in one of the ballrooms at the Renaissance Savery in the heart of downtown Des Moines, Holding the reception in a hotel ballroom offers your wilder guests the convenience of staggering to their room or being helped upstairs without worrying about having a designated driver. What To Do While in Town Des Moines has an active gay and lesbian community with a growing variety of clubs, organizations, activities and events – including a very lively annual Pride celebration – that reflects the diversity of the local community. The center of gay and lesbian life is the area around the Eastside of downtown in the East Village neighborhood. Here you will find Blazing Saddle, the campy neighborhood bar with their happy hours, Martini specials, boys night, girls night and even an occasional “Vegas Style” male revue. East Village also has an eclectic mix of hip restaurants, boutique stores and clubs. Eateries include a commendable sushi restaurant and a boisterous yet elegant piano bar. For the shopper, there are stores that sell original furniture designs like Sticks and local apparel lines like Smash, which was recently made famous by fellow Iowan, Ashton Kutcher. Other sites to take in while in Des Moines include the Iowa State Capitol, which towers over the city from a small hill, facing westward toward downtown. The capitol building is 275-foot tall and has a 23-karat gold leafed dome that glitters majestically in the setting sun. Gently cascading down to the west of the Capitol is a lush 10-acre garden that is meticulously maintained all year around. History buffs can go to the Iowa State historical Museum or the Living History Farms Museum, which tells the story of Midwestern culture and rural life in a 500-acre open-air museum with re-created frontier towns and dressed up actors playing pioneers. So what are you waiting for?
Des Moines, Iowa
is an open and welcoming destination for gay and lesbian travelers. Iowa’s capital city is a warm, friendly metro of about 0.5 million people including suburbs.
The large number of colleges and universities here give it a more liberal feel than many other towns the same size. It is also the insurance capital of the Midwest boasting more insurance firms than any other city in the nation except Hartford, CT. This has resulted in a diverse and young workforce that keeps the bars full and upscale restaurants open.
The Iowa Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on April 3, that same-sex marriages have equal protection under the Iowa constitution is further bolstering Des Moines’ diversity by offering a haven for gay travelers who want to plan a destination wedding and a very affordable honeymoon in Iowa’s lush countryside. Iowa does not have residency laws that would prevent out-of state couples from marrying there. Anyone from any other state can get legally married in Iowa after obtaining a marriage license from the County Recorder’s office.
Several local businesses have sprouted up to serve the gay marriage market – one of them is Lambda Weddings, a newly formed wedding and event planning group , which specializes in serving gay couples from other states.
Lambda Weddings offers easy wedding packages for out-of-state couples who don’t want to be bothered with planning an elaborate wedding or who just want to elope in secret. The base package includes a licensed minister, an elegant ceremony in a charming country setting, a personal wedding planner, chilled champagne, a complimentary cake, digital photos and of course the processing of the marriage license. Additional services such as airport pick-up, elaborate photo shoots, a sit-down reception or theme weddings can all be purchased for reasonable fees.
Ceremony Locations
A budget conscious couple could have a memorable service and a reception with the rolling hills of Madison County as a backdrop and honeymoon in one of the bed & breakfasts for a very reasonable price. Scenic trails, riding stables and hearty country breakfasts will invigorate anyone jaded by city life and bring back a fresh glow to your face.
Several local churches are open and welcoming of gay couples- the Unitarian Church, St. John’s Lutheran Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church have all opened their doors to conducting same-sex ceremonies- exemplifying a Midwestern “Live and Let Live” spirit.
The Downtown Farmers’ Market is a great way to spend the Sunday morning after the reception. Here you can walk away your hangover among hanging floral baskets, herbs and bedding plants and perennials. Market patrons can expect to see nearly 200 vendors, from 47 Iowa counties, with farm fresh products including Iowa raised pork, beef, lamb, poultry, fish, elk, baked breads, pies and cinnamon rolls. Shoppers can also find nuts, eggs, butter, cheese, wine, jams, jellies, beautiful cut flowers and a vast assortment of locally created arts, crafts, jewelry, rugs, and clothing. Spend a morning walking among flowers and fresh farm produce and then go over to the Gateway Market for brunch and you will begin to appreciate the joys of small town life in the Midwest.
If Virginia is for lovers, Iowa is for the those of us who are ready to say “I do! To have and to hold, for better or worse, in sickness and in health, from this day forward… till death do us apart.”

Amsterdam Gay Pride on the Canal July 31 – August 2
Gay Pride Amsterdam is the yearly highlight for gay Amsterdam. This year the main Amsterdam Pride weekend will be from July 31 – August 2, 2009.
Don’t miss this thrilling weekend, as Amsterdam Pride is one of the biggest and most special gay prides around the globe! With street parties all weekend long, the best club circuit parties and of course the famous Canal Parade on Saturday.
The Amsterdam Gay Pride weekend will be full of events and parties. In the end the complete program will be a mix for anyone’s taste. These are the main outlines of everything to come up. Keep an eye on Amsterdampride.nl to get the latest updates on parties and events.
For the thirteenth time the extravagant Canal Parade will be held during Amsterdam Pride 2008. With 250.000 spectators this event is the third largest in Amsterdam.
If you want to be a spectator of the Canal Parade we suggest you find a spot somewhere along the Prinsengracht or Amstel in the old city of Amsterdam. Also at the Stopera a lot of people are watching the boats come by. Many enjoy the parade standing on a bridge over the Prinsengracht.
The parade happens Saturday August 1st, between 14:00 and 18:00. See the whole Gay Pride schedule online.
A unique aspect this year is that the minister for the emancipation of homosexuals, Mr. Plasterk, will join the Canal Parade.
Last year Amsterdam Gay Pride drew in a record amount of visitors. Some 500,000 people watched the Canal Parade, where a record 75 boats took part.
For the first time there were also boats with heterosexuals, gay youths under 16, city boats and the mentally handicapped.
Gay Brazil – HOMOPHOBIA Must Stop!
Last year, Brazilian chief Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, held the First National Conference of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transvestites and Transsexuals to condemn the biblical belief that homosexuality is wrong!
Brazil Without Homophobia is a national program run by the Lula administration that teaches that homosexual orientation is unchangeable, and seeks to construct a culture in Brazil that is “affirming” towards homosexuality. The president of Brazil says “opposing” homosexuality makes you a sick person, and he believes such thoughts need to be criminalized.
LAST WEEK, during Gay Pride in SAO PAULO – At least 21 people were injured when a homemade bomb exploded at a spot where participants gathered after the gay pride parade in Brazil’s largest city.
A 17-year-old boy who took part in the parade remains in a coma at a Sao Paulo hospital after being attacked by a group of unknown persons who found him alone on an empty street after the nearly eight-hour parade.
Another youth was attacked in Roosevelt Plaza where the march ended, and a third was stabbed in Largo do Arouche Plaza.
Calling for “the criminalization of homophobia,” Lulu said opposition to homosexuality is “perhaps the most perverse disease impregnated in the human head.”
If the bill was to pass, violators will face up to five years in prison!
Brazil is very much a country of contrasts. When someone hears the word Brazil, one thinks of the great Amazon forest, fantastic beaches, great soccer players, Carnival time – and that’s all.
Brazil, the most important country in South America, certainly has MUCH more to offer – warm people, great cities with everything from slums to high technology, a wide range of weather patterns, an awesome mixture of cultures and races – and much more!
The Gay Dollar – Not Everybody Wants it!
People sometimes ask me, “Why do you need GAY TRAVEL? Why do you need to be separate?”
Um, because, why would I want to give my money to someone who hates me? I want to go somewhere gay friendly and give my money to someone who supports my community, or at least can smile and treat me decent.
A travel company who specialize in African Safari trips has exposed itself as institutionally homophobic in a series of shocking emails with Millivres Prowler Group, owners of DIVA, Pink Paper and GT.
Following a standard email enquiry about advertising opportunities, SafariWise employee Berdene MacLeod told our MPG representative to “piss off” before sending a second email stating: “Go wank yourself, you asshole faggot!”
When we asked SafariWise to comment on their use of homophobic abuse, they failed to respond.
Namibia has had a troubled history in regards to the protection of the rights and civil liberties of gay citizens. Sodomy is illegal in Namibia, and is punishable with prison time. Furthermore, statements by government leaders, such as Sam Nujoma and Jerry Ekandjo, concerning gays and lesbians have drawn both domestic and international condemnation.
SO DON’T GO THERE!
Granted, you can’t always be sure who is gay friendly and who is not. I am sure there are many days I buy my gas, or certain brands of groceries at the store, I am giving my money to haters.
Top Gay Friendly & Supportive companies include –
APPLE, GOOGLE, NIKE, CAMPBELLS SOUP, EASTMAN KODAK, LEVI – STRAUS, AETNA, AT & T, BAUSCH AND LAUMB

Gay Travel Safety Tips and Advice
Gay Couch Surfing and Hospitality Home Exchange
Would you like to make friends from all around the world right in your own home or when you travel?
Would you like to see a place from the locals’ perspective when you travel?
Would you like to save money on accommodation during your vacations?
You may have heard of home exchanges and couch surfing. This is along those lines. A hospitality exchange!
LGHEI (pronounced Elle-Gay) is an expanding worldwide network of lesbians and gay men who offer each other the gift of short term hospitality during their travels.
Lesbians and gay men from around the world offer their hospitality to other members at no charge. These hosts, in turn, are able to be received when they travel. There are currently more than 500 listings in over 30 countries.
An annual directory, available only to members, is published in March and a supplementary list of members who joined later in the year is mailed out in September. Next year, everything will be digital and online. Members who wish to travel use the directory to contact the members they would like to be received by. Members are expected to give their prospective hosts some advance notice before making their visit. Last minute requests for accommodation are not appreciated and can simply be denied. Members are expected to answer all requests for accommodation, whether in the affirmative or the negative. Members are expected to limit requests for hospitality to two nights. This protects hosts from being stuck with a guest with whom they are incompatible and protects the traveller from outright refusals of hospitality because of the hosts’ fear of that possibility. However, hosts are free to offer longer stays at their discretion – and many do after learning how interesting and pleasant their guests are.
Members offer anything from a guest bedroom to a sofa, to a foam mattress for a sleeping bag. The rest is up to you. At the time of the visit you may choose to offer airport pick-up, breakfast, tours of gay and/or tourist spots or whatever else a good host may think of – depending on your possibilities. Think how you would like to be received. Each member decides how many guests he/she can receive and when. Some hosts like to entertain – some simply offer a bed or couch for you and may rarely be present.
Nevertheless, this is a hospitality exchange and, therefore, not for those who aren’t capable of, or interested in, receiving other members. Don’t forget that both hosts and guests benefit from each visit! The hosts have their house rules, as we have ours, and appreciate when they are respected. Because the hospitality is free, a token gift or a dinner invitation for the hosts might be appreciated.
There is a $40 per year fee – and the organization is ran by volunteers. LGHEI.

Gay Days Disneyland in Anaheim – Queens in the Magic Kingdom October 2 – 4
For 12 years, gays and lesbians wearing red shirts have descended on Disneyland in California for Gay Days, an annual event that forces mainstream Americans and Mickey Mouse to deal with the LGBTQ community face to face.
Much different than the week long Gay Days held in Orlando each June at DisneyWorld, which draws lots of circuit boys and party-goers, this weekend in Anaheim draws over 30,000 people, but is a real mix of men, women, twinks, daddies, bears, couples and gaybies.
Years ago, Disneyland used to have a private party one night of the year for gays and lesbians. When the event was canceled in 1998, Gay Day Anaheim was created. “We based the happening on our big sister event in Orlando, Gay Day, which attracts over 100,000+ gays and lesbians from around the world each June.
Like the Orlando event, Gay Days Anaheim is a “mix in,” meaning gay people and straight people mingle together; the park is open to the general public. Also like Orlando’s Gay Day, we wear RED shirts to identify one another and show our numbers.” says producer Eddie Shapiro.
Disney doesn’t endorse any group that comes into their park during regular park operating hours. While they may reserve space (like they do for the Gay Days group), that does not connote an official endorsement. In order to make it truly official, “we’d need to rent out the entire park, and they don’t do that during regular operating hours.”
“Disney has been wonderfully supportive of the event, especially as it has grown over the years. They are involved in all of the official aspects of the event (hotel room blocks, the Info Center), and have been very accommodating. But they are not involved in the actual ‘unofficial gay days’ in the park. This year, however we continue to work closely with PRIDE, which is Disney’s LGBT diversity group, and they have done a great job of integrating the event as much as possible into Disneyland’s schedule.”
Saturday is the main day at Disneyland, and Sunday is the main day at Disney’s California Adventure. But producers of the event, Eddie Shapiro and Jeffrey Epstein always plan a weekend of festivities to please everyone.
“It’s important for us to be very inclusive of the entire LGBTQ community. We try really hard at scheduling the weekend with all kinds of activities that we hope will matter to all the different diverse tastes that make up our community. “
Past events have included a youth scavenger hunt, teen dance party, bears gathering, book reading, family photo ops, singles gatherings, couple dinners, lesbian lunch, movie screenings, celebrity meet-and-greet, ice cream social, morning wake-up work-outs, cocktail parties, and a big evening dance party at House of Blues.
“We really want EVERYONE to feel welcome and there is something for them!” explained Eddie.
It’s always interesting to see the straight men and women who show up at the park that day, unaffiliated with Gay Days, who appeared to be rethinking the red shirts they slipped into that morning, now finding themselves dressed in the same color as half the park’s patrons, most of whom were walking arm in arm with someone of the same sex!
For the most part, families are friendly and everyone has a great time. There are always those few right wingers who are upset that they chose the same weekend as the gays, and you may hear them muttering something under their breathe.
There have never been any reports of physical confrontations between gay people and homophobic guests during Gay Days. While I have heard of a few isolated incidents of people muttering rude remarks under their breath, 99% of the comments are overwhelmingly positive.
Last year a family struck up a conversation with my partner and I, and they were very much in support of equality for gays and the legalization of civil unions. Plus, while Disney does not endorse the event, they are aware it happens so security are on alert for any harassment, and the people in guest relations do a great job of handling any problems which may arise.
In 2007, The Walt Disney Co. changed its policy to allow same-sex couples to participate in a popular Fairy Tale Wedding program it runs mainly at its two U.S. resorts and cruise line.
Disney previously had allowed gay couples to organize their own weddings or commitment ceremonies at rented meeting rooms at the resorts, but had barred them from purchasing its Fairy Tale Wedding package and holding the event at locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World that are set aside specifically for weddings.
“We believe this change is consistent with Disney’s longstanding policy of welcoming all guests in an inclusive environment…
…We are not in the business of making judgments about the lifestyle of our guests. We are in the hospitality business and our parks and resorts are open to everyone,” a Disney spokesperson said.
There are lots of discounted rooms available for the Gay Days Anaheim event.
Stay at one of the fabulous Disneyland Resort hotels for a fraction of the regular price! Last year they sold out in advance. DON’T MISS OUT!
Also many local hotels particiapte with the Gay Days group offering weekend special pricing.

Holiday Inn Buena Park
New Gay Travel Guide recommends Hotel Menage. A wonderful boutique hotel right next door to Disneyland.
There is LOTS to see and do in Anaheim, and if you can afford the time, I would urge you to take an additional couple days to explore Anaheim, Orange County (the OC) and all of the surrounding beach and art communities. It’s a beautiful area of Southern California packed with inviting beaches, unparalleled shopping and entertainment, trendy restaurants, nightlife, championship golf, lively art districts, beautiful historic landmarks and the ultimate of family attractions.
Gay Days aficionados Jeffrey and Eddie immersed themselves in Disney culture so much so, that they even penned Queens in the Kingdom in 2007.

Wear Clean Underwear When You Travel
Our Favorite Online Fashion/Style Magazine Y V Y ran this hot spread from DOLCE AND GABBANA!
Remember when your mother used to say,” Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you get in an accident and end up in the hospital!” ?
How crazy was that?!
I always travel with nice underwear though. You don’t want to end up in a European hospital with some raggedy Fruit of Looms! You want something fabulous!
Art in the OC – Laguna Beach – Festival of Arts & Pageant of the Masters July 5 – August 31
Known for its miles of clean sandy beaches, working artists and annual festivals, Laguna Beach is the perfect California small town getaway for visitors near and far.
It has been a small gay enclave for decades. In the summer, downtown Laguna is simply mobbed, yet still retains its small-town feel, with sidewalk bistros and artsy shopping.
Framed by the San Joaquin hills, the coves and bluffs have a decidedly Mediterranean feel. Here you will find a small gay paradise with some very nice restaurants, gay beaches, small hotels and nightlife. Laguna Beach is a popular getaway for L.A. gays.
Located mid-way between Los Angeles and San Diego, and just a stone’s throw from Anaheim, the city of Laguna Beach is a seaside village of 25,000-plus residents that includes hundreds of local working artists and unique gift shops.
It is home for people who seek the tranquility of beach accommodations as well as endless cultural opportunities. These include dozens of art and music events throughout the year, as well as an art museum and a live stage theater. While there is not a gay-borhood per se’, there are gays everywhere!
Four of the well-known festivals include the
Sawdust Art Festival, (June 26-Aug.30))
Festival of Arts / Pageant of the Masters
(in July 5 – August 31)
and Art-A-Fair. (in July 26 – August 30)
California’s finest Summer art event , Festival of Arts, is staged in a six-acre canyon park near the ocean in Laguna Beach. The stars of this summertime tradition, which began here in 1932, are over 140 of the Southland’s most accomplished artists.
Each night during the summer season at 8:30 the Festival of Arts presents its most famous attraction, the Pageant of the Masters. It is like nothing you have ever seen!
Pageant of the Masters …What is it?
Ninety minutes of “living pictures” – incredibly faithful art re-creations of classical and contemporary works with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. An outdoor amphitheater, professional orchestra, original score, live narration, intricate sets, sophisticated lighting, expert staff, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers have won recognition for the Pageant as the best presentation of its kind.
These annual festivals together attract hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world who experience original artwork in many different forms. Scheduled throughout the summer and early fall, unique paintings, sculpture, photography and ceramics are just a few forms of art that visitors can enjoy.
More than two dozen hotels, B & B’s, seaside villas and full-service resorts dot the coastline throughout the city. There are accommodations for every taste and style. Many of these properties have been featured in media publications throughout the United States and many have breathtaking views.
When we were in Anaheim last year, we stayed at Hotel Menage. The same owner has two properties in Laguna Beach. La Casa Del Camino, a 1927 seaside retreat and landmark hotel with an awesome rooftop and Laguna Beach Inn , a Spanish Mediterranean Boutique Inn. – And the gorgeous Crystal Cove is right there nearby also!
When it comes to dining, Laguna Beach has many favorite, long-established restaurants as well as extraordinary choices in many ethnic cuisines. For the trendy or traditional experience, the area has become known as one of the best dining destinations in Southern California with many culinary delights.
