Pierre et Gilles – Double Je – 30th Anniversary Retrospective

Ah, France! Beauty, architecture, history, romance, food and wine,  museums, art….these are all things that come to mind when I think of France. And of course, Pierre et Gilles, my favorite artists of all time!
The fabulously gay French duo have been creating homoerotic eye-popping art for 30 years now. 

 Pierre et Gilles create dreamy portraits that transport their subjects—as well as the viewers—into an alternate world where camp, pop, burlesque, religion, and eroticism mingle in perfect harmony. Visual fantasies don’t get much richer than the sexy, glittery retouched photographs by French collaborative team. Creating the sets themselves, and with Pierre as photographer and Gilles as painter/elaborator, they create one-of-a-kind artworks of an unmistakably original style. Since the mid-1970s when these two handsome men met, fell in love and began making art together, they’ve produced a consistently sensuous body of work that’s an unabashed mix of commercial and high art, glamour, poetry and homoeroticism.

Famous and not so famous actors and actresses, musicians, and porn stars have all posed for Pierre et Gilles. A host of stars has passed before their lens, such as Iggy Pop, Madonna, Marc Almond, Nina Hagen, Catherine Deneuve, Laetitia Casta, Marilyn Manson, Mireille Mathieu… though many of their portraits also feature unknowns and/or up and coming beautiful people.






Much more than just an exhibition catalog, this book brings together all of the 130 works included in the exhibition as well as an additional 170 pieces focusing on the past ten years.  460 pages, this whopping 7#   tome is a must-have “bible” on every coffee table! – Also included is a tribute text by the artist Jeff Koons.

They play with stereotypes of religion, sexuality and culture and draw from numerous genres for their inspiration. They play irreverently with our perceptions of religion and pop culture, juxtaposing the secular and non-secular, the saint and the sinner, the divine and the depraved. It’s magical. It’s sexy. It’s beautiful!

There was a wonderful photographer in the 60’s by the name of James Bidgood. A sylized precursor to David LaChappelle and Pierre et Gilles, James really revolutioned gay male erotic imagery. In a tiny studio apartment, he created fantasy lands! BEFORE photoshop. Vibrant colors and wild props he brought home from his job at Macy’s, were his signature. It is said James inspired P&G.

Whitney Houston’s Comeback Album Due Out Soon ?

        

It’s been a crazy ride for Whitney Houston! After marrying R&B singer Bobby Brown at the height of her career, rumors of drug and spousal abuse led to a decline in her album sales and her public image. Her personal troubles would be talked about more than any of her music, regularly appearing in the tabloid press. Houston began looking and sounding less like the singer people came to know and she stopped making public appearances.

Houston underwent two drug rehab programs in 2005 and 2006. Clive Davis forced her into the second one. After a successful second program in 2006, Houston divorced Bobby Brown and gained custody of their daughter, Bobbi Kristina. She has since been working on her 7th studio album with music mogul and close friend and mentor Clive Davis.

During the summer, Rapper Ne-Yo who was consulted on the comeback album said that he “is unimpressed by the CD as it is now. It is same the song performed 8 times. They all had the one same theme, which was ‘My name is Whitney Houston and this is my triumphant comeback’.

We all understand she has gone through a lot. I’m sure we all get that but I think she needs songs about regular everyday life. So that’s what I’m planning to add to the album – songs about everyday emotions.”

Last week, news broke out about a contract dispute between Houston and Sony. “Whitney Houston does not have a new contract with Arista Records/Sony BMG. She always had a contract.”

“In 2001, L.A. Reid handed her a check for $20 million. She spent it. Her recordings didn’t earn out. So now, still under contract, she’s making a new album. She’s in New York working on what she started in Los Angeles a few months ago. All systems are go.”

“Arista, meanwhile, has rejiggered her financial arrangements. They did not give her $10 million, as reported elsewhere. But sources at the company say that Houston has been compensated recently, they’re looking out for her, and making sure she’s happy and in good shape.”
 
How will it all turn out? Your guess is as good as mine.

The release date of Houston’s  album was expected to be next month, in time for the holiday season, but now some sources say it may be  early 2008.

Earlier this year, Whitney Houston’s fans  flocked to a New Jersey auction house to buy the cash-strapped singer’s castoff stained bustiers, feathered purses, scratched vinyl records, discarded underwear and other artifacts.

More than 400 lots were put up for sale, including pianos, keyboards, organs, drums, designer hats, shoes and outfits from well-known names like Giorgio Armani, Jean Paul Gaultier, Pamela Dennis, Gianni Versace and Dolce & Gabbana. Whitney could not pay her storage bills any longer and she fell behind on her property taxes at her estate in Atlanta.

Gay Porn Blog, this year “Folsom Events set them up — and they took the bait! –  Concerned Women for America has called on CA elected officials to publicly condemn the poster for the 2007 Folsom Street Fair — a parody of the Last Supper with apostle porn stars (Titan Exclusives Tober Brant & Dean Flynn), drag nuns (Sister Roma, natch), and — gasp! — a black Jesus (source Towleroad). – Despite the fact that Folsom Street Fair is a pan-sexual event, and there are women in the poster, they are — of course — blaming the ‘Gays’.”

Seriously though, it’s not as though it was a big secret, really. Siegfried avoided answering the question in a 1999 Vanity Fair interview, and here in Vegas the pair have never had any presence in the gay community outside of buying ads in the program book of a major AIDS fund-raising show. Yet  MGM Mirage spokesman Alan Feldman said the night of the tiger attack, he was frank: “It’s well-known that they were lovers at one time,” shrugged Feldman, whose company owns the Mirage Hotel and Casino, “I don’t think anybody is hiding that.” Similarly, that 1999 Vanity Fair article–headlined, by the way, “Married, With Tigers” included a quote from the duo’s pal Shirley MacLaine that acknowledged their past romantic involvement. And in Siegfried’s first solo interview, with CNN’s Larry King five days after the mauling, Siegfried himself confirmed with considerable emotion that his connection to Roy “is a relationship second to none” in his life.



It will be nice to actually hear it from THEM. We’ve all known it, but it’s nice they’re going to admit and discuss it. I’m also eager to hear the story of Roy’s stroke and recovery. It’s been WAY too long since their last book. I had the pleasure of working for them for about 7 years, as a freelance writer. They never once discussed their private lives in front of me, so I have nothing revealing to share. They were very wonderful  to work for and it was an honor for me to work with such celebrity royalty!

The International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA) is an organization comprised of numerous regional Gay Rodeo Associations from across the United States and Canada. IGRA, in collaboration with member associations, assist these associations in raising and donating thousands of dollars to charity in their communities each year. The Gay and Lesbian Communities of the United States and Canada have been enriched by the educational efforts of IGRA through its sanctioning and sponsorship of the various events and activities which are a part of what we call “Gay Rodeo”.

Gay Rodeo had its beginnings in 1976 at the National Reno Gay Rodeo in Nevada. Over the next eight years local rodeo associations were formed in Colorado, Texas, California, and Arizona. In 1985, these four Gay Rodeo Associations along with Oklahoma founded the IGRA. From these beginnings, the IGRA has spread the Rodeo spirit across the United States and into Canada.

LITTLE BRITAIN SET TO INVADE THE US!


  

Much like QUEER AS FOLK and other European imports, British sketch comedy stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams are planning to adapt their hit series “Little Britain” for U.S. television, a spokesman for the actors said this week.


The two, whose outrageously embellished stereotypes have had Britons roaring with laughter and sometimes horrified for four years, will appear in six half-hour episodes on HBO, the channel which promoted “The Sopranos” and fellow Briton Ali G.


They have a wealth of characters to choose from, including proudly gay Welshman Dafydd who is outraged whenever his status as the “only gay in the village” is threatened and teenage delinquent mother Vicky Pollard, whose truculent reply to authority has become part of the modern British lexicon.


“Yeah, but no, but yeah, but…”


“We’re very keen to take Little Britain to as wide an audience as possible, so we’re looking forward to working in the States,” Walliams said.


The U.S. series will be executive produced by the one and only mastermind Simon Fuller, who was behind the Spice Girls and American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, and etc. etc. –  described the new series as “something original and definitive”.


“The show is an absolute smash everywhere it is seen and I am certain it is going to be loved by a U.S. TV audience as well,” Fuller said.


But it remains to be seen whether U.S. audiences will take to characters which could also include a ruthless fake invalid, a middle-aged matron who projectile vomits when her conservative values are offended, a bumbling and unscrupulous hypnotist as well as a grown man whose mother still breastfeeds him.

My guess, the gays will love it!

GAY GAMES CHICAGO DECLARED A SUCCESS

         2006 Gay Games®, Chicago Games, Inc., (CGI) the host organization for the event, announced this week that it has completed the post-Games fundraising and wind down process and that the 2006 Gay Games broke even. Such a positive financial result reverses a 20-year trend, having not been achieved since Gay Games II in 1986. CGI accomplished the result with 2 fewer years planning time than most Gay Games.

“We are extremely grateful to our many donors, sponsors, volunteers, partners and vendors whose commitment and contributions made today’s announcement possible,” said Tracy Baim, CGI board Co-Vice Chair and leader of the wind-down efforts. “Each deserves the appreciation of our city and the worldwide LGBT sports community.”

“We would like to extend special appreciation to partners Dick Uyvari and Joe La Pat, Chicagoans who significantly funded the 2006 Gay Games international scholarship program and created a Gay Games matching grant program to assist in the post-Games fundraising,” said Sam Coady, CGI Board Co-Chair.

After a heat wave and other circumstances increased expenses and created the need for additional fundraising, Uyvari and La Pat donated additional financial support. Uvyari is a long-time Gay Games supporter, having competed in six of the seven Gay Games. Other key post-Games donors included Fred Eychaner, Michael Leppen, and former U.S. Ambassador James Hormel and his partner, Tim Wu.

The Gay Games have always been a boon for the local economy. Nevertheless, the past three Gay Games host committees lost significant amounts of money, threatening the future of the quadrennial sports & culture festival. For the first time ever, the Gay Games also faced a competing LGBT sports event. Held in Montreal just one week after the Gay Games, that competing event’s host organization ended up losing several million dollars.

Chicago’s business model differentiated itself by dramatically increasing corporate partnerships, relying significantly upon volunteer professionals and pro bono services, establishing a sponsored worldwide marketing and media campaign, and outsourcing non-core elements to third parties.

The 2006 Gay Games themselves contributed $50 to $80 million to the local economy, with some estimating that another 10 years of positive LGBT tourism visibility will generate millions more dollars in the long term.

Housed inside the city’s second-oldest hotel, it is the oldest gay bar in the western United States and an anchor of Laguna’s gay community. If the Boom were demolished, an important local institution would be
lost forever.

Will the lifelong bachelor and Mr. Angelina Jolie step up to the plate? Boys, it’s the least you
can do for Pride Month. But the bar’s lease is up in September, so you have to act fast! Give
us something to really celebrate and you’ll be our hero’s for life!

DISNEY and LAS VEGAS ALLOWS GAY SAME SEX WEDDINGS!


Walt Disney Co. has changed its policy to allow same-sex couples to participate in a popular Fairy Tale Wedding program it runs mainly at its two U.S. resorts AND cruise line, a Disney
spokesman said this week!


Disney previously had allowed gay couples to organize their own weddings or commitment ceremonies at rented meeting rooms at the resorts, but had barred them from purchasing its Fairy Tale Wedding package and holding the event at locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World that are set aside specifically for weddings.


“We are updating our Fairy Tale Wedding guidelines to include commitment ceremonies,” Disney Parks and Resorts spokesman Donn Walker said. “This is consistent with our policy of creating a welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment for all of our guests.”


Disney’s Fairy Tale Wedding packages start at $8,000 and include a wedding planner, the ceremony, food and beverages, flowers and table decorations. – It better be fabulous!

LAS VEGAS has been welcoming gay ceremonies for a couple years now. Gay Chapel of Las Vegas is Las Vegas’s only gay owned and operated ceremony chapel. “We take pride in offering the finest facilities available to our community”.  Several other chapels in the city also welcome gay unions. And if you really want to whoop it up,  HARRAHS CORP  which runs Caesars, Flamingo, Rio and  Paris, all offer same-sex union packages!  (Treasure Island was offering packages – I don’t know if they still are or not, but I would assume all of the WYNN hotels offer something…)  I had a couple friends who got hitched at Paris and had their cake done by the famed Parisian baker LeNotre! Talk about fabulous! And they said Paris was super gay-friendly!

  Getting back to Disney for a moment – Jeffrey Epstein and Eddie Shapiro’s “Queens in the Kingdom: The Ultimate Gay & Lesbian Guide to the Disney Theme Parks,” has just come out now in a revised and expanded second edition.


The book features more than 400 pages of tips on optimum visiting times, prime gay and lesbian Disney attractions and even the best places to share a gay kiss without suffering Ursula’s wrath. “Queens in the Kingdom” is campier than Tinkerbell, but answers each and every question that a gay Disney lover could ever have.

TOMBOY BUSTS OUT OF THE CLOSET!

              


TOMBOY! He has a hit song and video, OK2BGAY. The video and album actually came out last fall, but has been sweeping the country, gaining in popularity. 





                                                    



His majesty the queen,  Thomas Bickham, alias Tomboy,  
was born on the 29th of march 1975.
3 seconds later his twin brother Michael came along.

Connections in the fashion industry and the world of entertaintment finally lead Tomboy to what seemed to be his destiny in life: To use his voice as a recording artist.
