Short Mountain Tennessee Radical Fairy Gathering

radfae.org

The RadFae.org web site exists to pull together Radical Faerie
information: links to resources and web pages, news, information, and
pointers to other faerie lists. Our site is also available to host
various faerie projects.
If you are new to the faeries, join the faerie email list.
Post a question there about faeries in your area, or introduce
yourself. It is our international circle of ongoing conversation. It can
be educational, inspiring, awakening, provoking. Then take a look for
faeries near you on the Local Circles page.
Short Mountain Sanctuary (SMS) in Tennessee  is a collective providing queer safe space. We strive to live lightly on the land and to maintain an environment that is open, free, and stimulating to each person’s growth and creativity. We make decisions by consensus. Life here is simple and rustic. We drink springwater, use an outhouse, and heat with wood. What electricity we have we collect from the sun. The heart of the community is an antebellum log cabin that serves as kitchen, dining, library, and common space. Residents live in a variety of homebuilt one- to five-person dwellings. We grow much of our food, herbs, and dazzling flowers. Goats supply us with milk and chickens with eggs.
The Radical Faeries (also Faeries and Fae) are a loosely-affiliated, worldwide network and counter-cultural movement seeking to reject hetero-imitation and redefine queer identity through spirituality. The Radical Faerie movement started in the United States among gay men during the 1970s sexual and counterculture revolution.
The movement has expanded in tandem with the larger gay rights movement, challenging commercialization and patriarchal aspects of modern LGBT life while celebrating pagan constructs and rituals.  Faeries tend to be fiercely independent, anti-establishment, and community-focused. Faerie culture is undefinable as a group; however, it has similar characteristics to “Marxism, feminism, paganism, Native American and New Age spirituality, anarchism, the mythopoetic men’s movement, radical individualism, the therapeutic culture of self-fulfillment and self-actualization, earth-based movements in support of sustainable communities, spiritual solemnity coupled with a camp sensibility, gay liberation and drag.”
Radical Faeries today embody a wide range of genders, sexual orientations, and identities. Many sanctuaries and gatherings are open to all, while some still focus on the particular spiritual experience of man-loving men co-creating temporary autonomous zones. Faerie sanctuaries adapt rural living and environmentally sustainable concepts to modern technologies as part of creative expression. Radical Faerie communities are generally inspired by indigenous, native or traditional spiritualities, especially those that incorporate genderqueer sensibilities.

Is It Really Safe to Travel to Puerto Vallarta?

Is it safe to travel to

Puerto Vallarta?

In a word, the answer is BIG yes! It is safe to travel to Puerto
Vallarta.

PV is part of the very diverse and large Mexican state of
Jalisco. Some sensational news outlets have incorrectly reported that the US State
Department is warning against all travel to Jalisco. NOT TRUE.

The US Department of State   said for  Puerto Vallarta –  There is no recommendation
against travel to Guadalajara and Puerto
Vallarta.
There is also no recommendation against travel on principal
highways in
Jalisco between Guadalajara including the
portions that cross in to the southern portions of the state of Nayarit.

Also – Mexico City (also known as the Federal District): No advisory is in effect.

Puerto Vallarta’s Tourism Board has commissioned a study from the security consulting firm Thomas Dale and Associates (TDA).
The firm found that “the number of negative events involving foreigners
or non‐foreigners is fractional compared to the large ex‐pat resident
population and the millions of visitors that come to vacation each year
in Puerto Vallarta.”

you can read more at Visit Puerto Vallarta.

Unless you were under a rock the last few years, you could not help but hear how
dangerous  parts of  Mexico has become, and yes, it’s true drug wars have
escalated violence in parts of Mexico. “Collateral damage” the news calls it – which really means  that innocent people
have been robbed, hurt or killed.

THIS IS NOT HAPPENING IN PUERTO VALLARTA!!

When I went to Vallarta last Spring, a friend told me , “OH MY GOD, I won’t go there any more because of all the kidnapping and robberies!” – I called some friends in PV and they assured me it was NOT happening there. And that is mostly all happening near the border.

So I went for a week. And everything was fine. Just as it always
was.  I walked the streets Vallarta  alone day or night. I never felt
uncomfortable or scared.
I’ve been living here for 11 years. And have had ZERO problems
or run-ins with bad guys or police (well, there was that ticket for
using my cellphone while driving…), ” says Paul who owns Hotel Mercurio.

“Many cities in the US have much more security problems than PV…or many other Mexican cities, for that matter.

Puerto Vallarta is the most visited gay destination in Mexico.

It has always been a safe place to live and visit and continues to be!

2nd Annual Private Gay Six Flags Event Returns to Chicago

Out In The Park at Six Flags Great America

Returns in 2013 with a BANG!

A Spectacular Night of Amusement and Entertainment to Help Benefit Chicago House!

Out In The Park is an annual private LGBTQ Saturday night event featuring unlimited riding of ALL Six Flags Great America’s amazing rides and live music by an internationally sought after DJ who calls Chicago home, Matthew Harvat, delivering a complete 4 hour party-celebration dance area everyone can enjoy when taking a break from riding. New this year is a laser light show to dance above the crowd and some go-go gods to dance with the crowd.

Plus live musical performance by national recording artists Eli LiebJess Godwin and Isaiah Grass.

In an interview with ChicagoPride.com: “We are very excited to be asked to present this event annually by the executives at Six Flags Great America based on last year’s success and their excitement in allowing us this unique fundraising opportunity at such an awesome private venue inside their park for our community” said Derrick Sorles, owner of BestGayChicago.com. “We are proud to have Chicago House benefiting from this year’s event and we are so excited to have Mini Cooper of Chicago co-presenting with us!”

In 2012, over 3600 people came out to support this event and nearly $12,000 was raised for TPAN. For 2013, over 7000-8000 people are expected to come out and BestGayChicago.com hopes to raise close to $20,000 for Chicago House.

“What’s great about the event is that it is closed to the general public, ” explains Michael Snell. “The LGBTQ attendees and their friends and family can enjoy the park with little or no lines (no Flash Pass needed)  and no hassle’s from anyone. It will be like a fall gay pride celebration!”

Last year there were comments from the community that people who did not enjoy rides, had no reason to come. So this year, more entertainment has been added.  Singers Eli Lieb, Isaiah Grass  and Jess Godwin will  perform  on a stage, separate from the dance area.

The park will once again be serving beer and specialty drinks, at reduced drink prices, just for us! And  we will be planning events on Friday night, Saturday daytime, Saturday after the park, and Sunday recovery things to do! We’ll be announcing events at Scarlett, Taverna 750, Charlies and Hamburger Marys in Chicago and Milwaukee! Making a whole weekend of fun for everyone.

“The other thing that makes this event is so great, is the fact it is supported by everyone.” says Derrick Sorles. “We are so happy and humbled that our peers GRAB Magazine, Chicago Pride.com, and Wisconsin’s QUEST Magazine are also involved in helping to make this a huge success and special thanks to our other Community Partners Walgreens and Mini Cooper of Chicago.

Ticket Prices —-Advance ticket price is $38 for this private event.  There will be FREE parking! (A $22 savings!) Tickets are available now online   at GaySixFlagsChicago.com.

Unfortunately, you can NOT use a smart phone to order tickets.

Not Everyone in France is Ready for Marriage Equality

Seems some folks in France are NOT ready for Marriage Equality yet. A huge demonstration happened in Paris, where hundreds of thousands of adults and children protested the upcoming Marriage For Everyone  bill.

The Guardian reports:

Hundreds of thousands of people –
conservative activists, children, retirees, priests – many bussed in
from the French provinces – converged on the capital on Sunday in a
last-ditch bid to stop the bill.

The lower house of France’s
parliament approved the “marriage for everyone” bill last month with a
large majority, and it now faces a vote in the Senate next month. Both
houses are dominated by President François Hollande’s Socialist party
and its allies. Sustained protests led by opposition conservatives in
this traditionally Catholic country have eroded support for the draft
law in recent months, and organisers hope Sunday’s march will weigh on
the Senate debate.

The first few hours of the protest were
peaceful. But as it was meant to be winding down, about 100 youths tried
to push past police barricades on to the Champs-Elysées. In an
indication of the sensitivity of the issue, protesters had been barred
from marching on the avenue that cuts through central Paris and draws
throngs of tourists daily… tear gas was needed to control the crowd.

The crowd was estimated at 300,000 people, though organizers said it was 1.2 million.

Opinion polls show a vast majority are
in favor.

The bill passed the National Assembly last month and will probably  pass
the Senate in April.

France was among the most advanced
countries in the world when it passed a civil union law in 1999 granting
same sex couple the same benefits as straight couples (including
immigration and social security).

Best and Worst Gay Travel Destinations

Sweden is the BEST, Iran’s is the WORST and the US is somewhere in the middle.

That’s the scoop  from the 2012 Spartacus International Gay Guide, the go-to guidebook for gay travel.

Spartacus International Gay Guide 2013/2014: 42nd Edition (Spartacus Travel Guide)

Yes, some people still use books instead of the internet.
And my good friend Davey Wavey is on the cover!

Sweden scored top marks for its anti-discrimination laws, recognition
of gay unions, positive travel marketing and no institutional
persecution of the LGBT community. The remaining top nine countries were
all in Europe except Canada, which came in at number four.

The United States ranked 38 — thanks to anti-gay laws, a lack of
marriage equality and unfriendly areas of the country.

It was tied with
Aruba, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Croatia, Curacao, Hungary, Italy, Mexico and
Thailand.

Way at the bottom were, predictably, countries hostile to gays like Jamaica and the Bahamas and those with the death penalty for homosexuality, including the United Arab Emirates(Dubai)  and Iran.

Gay men have different travel wishes. The best confirmation of this is
the unique success story of the SPARTACUS INTERNATIONAL GAY GUIDE, which
has been published for more than four decades now. This edition of the
SPARTACUS International Gay Guide features approximately 22,000
addresses on around 1,300 pages which are of interest for gay men.

Whether these addresses are hotels in Kenya, bars in Hong Kong or discos
in Buenos Aires – no other guide offers such extensive information
about places in which gay men can feel welcome and can be themselves.

A
refined code system, created as abbreviations and pictograms, offers
information about that which one can expect and where. In addition each
country is introduced with a short, informative text, which describes
the legal and social position of homosexuals.

In order to guarantee the
actuality of the data, the SPARTACUS editorial team undertakes
extensive research throughout the year, with the result that the
information in SPARTACUS is usually even more up date and reliable than
those in Internet.

Regardless where one is going – with the SPARTACUS
INTERNATIONAL GAY GUIDE one is always up to date. And for those who find
the guide still is not compact enough: the complete guide is available
as application for your iPhone.

State Department Meets with Gay Travel Representatives

TRAVELING ABROAD can be a little scary – walking into a strange country, not quite sure knowing what to expect. And gay travelers need to be informed. Some countries do not take a liking to us!

The State Department on Wednesday hosted a roundtable to discuss its
efforts to provide LGBT-specific information to Americans who plan to
travel overseas.

“We want all of our citizens to be informed about their destinations
abroad and any particular challenges that they may face,” Janice Jacobs,
assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Consular Affairs, said.
“We want them to know about the services that are available to them at
our embassies and consulates if problems should happen, despite their
precautions.”

Jacobs’ comments come five days after the Bureau of Consular Affairs added LGBT-specific information to its website
that includes travel warnings, alerts and other country-specific
advisories. These include references to “widespread” anti-gay
discrimination in Ukraine, efforts to curb “the promotion of
homosexuality” in Russian cities and an advisory that urges LGBT
travelers to “consider exercising caution when visiting Estonia” because
of harassment and violence those who have publicly shown affection have
experienced.

The country-specific profiles also include information about HIV/AIDS travel restrictions.

Gay Pride Kicks off April 6 in Phoenix Arizona

GAY PRIDE kicks off this year in April in Phoenix Arizona!
Gay Pride is typically in June in many states, but some of the warmer weather cities have now chosen to celebrate on alternate days.

THE HISTORY OF PHOENIX PRIDE In 1981, a group of gay & lesbian
activists organized the first Pride march thru the streets of downtown
Phoenix to the state Capitol building. It was a politically focused
march to bring awareness to gay rights issues in Phoenix.

Nearly ten years later, a group of volunteers joined together to
coordinate the annual Pride festival. This committee, best known as the
Phoenix Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee, Inc. helped establish a 501(c) 3
non-profit organization known today as Phoenix Pride.

The organization was created as an educational non-profit to continue
to educate and promote issues that affect the LGBTQ community in metro
Phoenix. Under the leadership of Phoenix Pride, there has been an annual
march, festival, parade or celebration in metro Phoenix for more than
30 years.

The organization is a leader in the metro Phoenix LGBTQ community.
During the past several years, the organization has been able to make
significant contributions to other LGBTQ focused non-profit
organizations and has awarded scholarships to deserving LGBTQ
individuals continuing their education. It is the goal of the
organization to continue developing community programs to benefit the
LGBTQ focused non-profit community and to continue to raise public
awareness about the LGBTQ community in hopes to eliminate homophobia,
transphobia and discrimination still very much prevalent some 30 years
later.

In 2011, the LGBTQ community celebrated the 31st Anniversary of the
first LGBTQ march in Phoenix. Phoenix Pride will continue to honor and
celebrate our community by promoting April as “Pride Month” in Phoenix,
Arizona and by continuing the “10 Days of Pride” started in celebration
of our 30th Anniversary in 2010.

GayTravel.com Crowns the next Gay Travel Guru Bryan Kosarek

 By Sophie Needelman

Traveling the world is the
dream of a lifetime. This dream is made even better when traveling is your job-
and when, as a member of the LGBT community, you get to represent a segment of
the population while exploring, demanding, and experience gay friendliness in
the destinations you visit. GayTravel.com’s (
Gaytravel.com)
Gay Travel Guru campaign made this dream a reality for one lucky winner, as
well as for the incredible finalists along the way. For Guru winner Bryan
Kosarek,
this dream will continue to be reality as he leaves last month’s Guru
finale at Aspen Gay Ski Week to begin his gay-traveling journey around the
country.

Not only is being the Gay
Travel Guru an absolute dream job, but also it is the ultimate way to serve the
gay community as its representative in travel. With its Guru campaign,
GayTravel.com (www.gaytravel.com) brought
to the attention of the LGBT community the importance in engaging in gay and
gay friendly travel- as well as the importance of engaging in specific LGBT
oriented travel while visiting any of the world’s incredible travel
destinations.

GayTravel.com (www.gaytravel.com)
provided all of the Guru finalists with the opportunity to expose themselves to
the gay travel community which truly gave a voice to this progressive body of
travelers. The Guru campaign unfolded over the course of six months, where
applicants submitted various forms of travel content and social media engagement
to best advocate for their inner Gay Travel Guru. Some of these contributions
included photos, videos, blog articles, and more. Finalist Jared reflects on
his Guru experience: “The entire process, from start to finish, was an
amazing experience. I learned a lot about about myself by venturing out of my
comfort zone. Gaytravel.com expects a lot from the Gay Travel Guru, so you must
be willing to push your boundaries to generate interesting content for viewers.
I met a lot of amazing people on this journey and made memories that I will
carry with me for the rest of my life. It was a lot of work but it was more
than worth it!”

What began for Jarred,
Bryan, and all of the other finalists as simply pressing a button to submit an
application turned into the adventure of a lifetime as the finalist pool was
flown to Aspen Gay Ski Week where an epic finale took place to crown Bryan
Kosarek as the Gay Travel Guru. The incredible Guru finale was just icing on
the cake of a legendary campaign by GayTravel.com in the attempt to bring the
LGBT community together under the umbrella of the love of travel- as well as to
grant one lucky winner the chance of a lifetime!

Joey Konecek, GayTravel.com’s
Community Director who spearheaded the Gay Travel Guru campaign, reveals
essential details about the campaign, the finalists, and the grand finale at
last month’s Aspen Gay Ski Week:

SN: What were the main events held over the course of the Guru finale? (overview of events basically)

JK: “The finalists were really put to the test throughout our time in Denver and Aspen. Aside from having only 1 day to create a video about the destination and hotel sponsors they were also asked to sell raffle tickets, do a modeling shoot, compete in the downhill costume contest and host parties. And if that wasn’t enough they were also being filmed throughout the week which meant doing confessionals and getting very little time to themselves. Aside from that each finalist was also doing a ton of social media and self promoting online and in person at Gay Ski Week.”

SN: What about Aspen made it a great place to hold the Guru finale?

JK: “Winter in Aspen is magic! The city is clean and beautiful and all around a great place to film.”

SN: What other cities were involved in the Guru process? Why were they chosen and how did they contribute to the atmosphere of the entire Guru campaign?

JK: “Aside from our sponsor destinations like Thailand, Dallas, and Key West we would really like to thank Denver, in particular the Hotel Curtis, The Westin Denver Downtown, and the arts community for being such gracious hosts.”

SN: How did Aspen Gay Ski Week set the stage for the finale?

JK: “We really could not have asked for a better backdrop for the finale! Vegas was great last season, but Aspen was the perfect setting and being Gay Ski Week made it even better. Pamela Herr who manages the events really rolled out the red carpet for our finalists and the gaytravel.com team. We also had amazing participation from her staff and the board of directors such as Todd Heimel, President.”

SN: How did the finale contribute to the atmosphere at Aspen Gay Ski Week?

JK: “The patrons and staff of Aspen Gay Ski could not have been more accommodating. Having the cameras around made our finalists very popular among the crowds and trust me; they ate it up.  Our team also had the opportunity to help in raising funds for amazing non profit organizations that Aspen Gay Ski Week supports.”

SN: What were some highlights from the finale?

JK: “The finale was extremely emotional for everyone involved. We were all a family in Aspen; the staff, the finalists, and the camera crew all became very close over the duration of the trip and it showed at the finale event. I personally cried my eyes out, it was six months of hard work for everyone followed by a week of exhausting events, tasks, and challenges, it was the end and I couldn’t hold it back.  Some were happy and some were sad but for the most part they finalists really supported Bryan in his victory.

Gay Travel to Tel Aviv is Still HOT HOT HOT

Four years ago, the straight mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron Huldai, realized his city had all the necessary ingredients to become a leading gay tourist destination: warm weather, pristine beaches, a vibrant nightlife, a thriving gay community, and some of the most beautiful men on the planet. The problem was, Tel Aviv wasn’t known as a gay town.

A study commissioned by the mayor’s
office showed gay tourists were more inclined to go to cities like
Barcelona or Berlin rather than Israel, a country they associated with
religion and war. So the mayor had an idea: brand Tel Aviv as its own
separate entity.

“We
knew that people who had been to Tel Aviv loved it,” says Yaniv
Waizman, the mayor’s adviser on gay community affairs. “So we made a
switch. We no longer talked about Israel, but Tel Aviv.”

There is an awesome story this week at the Daily Beast, about Israel.

Matthew Mitcham Autographed Books

WE LOVE AUSTRALIA!

And we love Matthew Mitcham!
Sydney Mardis Gras is heating up this month, with an explosion of parties happening March 2, 2013.
In 2009, Matthew Mitcham was the Chief of Parade of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras after being declared the 2008 Australian Sports Performer of the Year.
I just finished reading his book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Its packed full of photographs as well!
Despite his diving achievements, Mitcham struggled to attract
corporate sponsorship. In the The Advocate, an editor said, “What’s a
guy to do when he’s got the gold, the fame, the man – but no big-time
endorsements?” In 2009, Mitcham secured financial support from the
Australian telecommunications provider Telstra. In 2010, he was
announced as the new face of Funky Trunks and has appeared on
advertising campaigns across Australia, Europe and the United States. He
is also a spokesman and “swimwear ambassador” for the brand.

“People kept remarking on how they were surprised that a gold
medal and fame hadn’t changed me. I always responded, ‘Why would I
change? Being me is the easiest person to be.’ I was lying. It wasn’t.”

Russia Could Enact Anti-Gay Law Nationwide

Russia was never on the top of my short wish list, of places to visit. Now it looks like I will never go there!

The new legislation being pushed by the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox
Church would make it illegal nationwide to provide minors with
information that is defined as “propaganda of sodomy, lesbianism,
bisexuality and transgenderism.”
It includes a ban on holding public
events that promote gay rights. St. Petersburg and a number of other
Russian cities already have similar laws on their books.

The bill is part of an effort to promote traditional Russian values as
opposed to Western liberalism, which the Kremlin and church see as
corrupting Russian youth and by extension contributing to a wave of
protest against President Vladimir Putin’s rule.

Samburov describes the anti-gay bill as part of a Kremlin crackdown on
minorities of any kind — political and religious as well as sexual —
designed to divert public attention from growing discontent with Putin’s
rule.

The board commissioned a series of cool and fun ads featuring
average looking  straight couples amidst gay and lesbian
revelry.

In the last 10 years, Las Vegas has really made an effort to welcome the gay community. Voted in the top three most popular US destinations by GLBT travelers, Las Vegas is a playground for adults and has it all!

Recognized as a safe, culturally diverse and supportive city, Las
Vegas is on par with cities such as San Francisco, New York and Miami Beach in
welcoming the gay community. With more options than ever before, it’s no
surprise that gays and lesbians are booking their stay at one of the many 4 star hotels in Las Vegas with their
friends for a few nights.

Gay Travel to Sizzling MIAMI in March for Winter Party

WINTER PARTY in Miami is one of the funnest weeks I have ever had.

The 2013 Winter Party Festival in beautiful Miami Beach, is one of the most anticipated events of the year, the hottest winter in the world. WPF’13 features six action-packed days and nights, nine spectacular dance parties and over 10,500 guests from around the world.

Party with a Purpose: Winter
Party Festival proceeds benefit the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
and local Miami nonprofit organizations that serve the LGBT community.

Launched in 1994 as a one-time charity dance event on the sands of
beautiful South Beach, Winter Party Festival has evolved into a
week-long series of events benefiting the LGBT community nationally and
locally.  A portion of the net proceeds of WPF support the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s
efforts to take action, build power and create change for LGBT
people. The majority of the proceeds are donated to local service
organizations through a grant-making process administered by The Miami Foundation.
