NEW YEARS AROUND THE WORLD

For 100 years, TIMES SQUARE in NEW YORK has drawn huge crowds for their annual New Years Eve celebration! More than 1 million people crowded the streets last night.

Elsewhere around the world, JAPAN (top left) inundate their postal system with New Years Greeting cards to one another. The post office starts accpeting the greeting cards around mid-December, but do not deliver them until New Years Day. – an you imagine our post office delivering cards on Christmas day?!

In Mexico (top right), several superstitions are noted. Family and friends gather and each eat 12 grapes, one for each stroke of midnight, and make a wish for each grape consumed.  (Can’t you just drink some champagne and make wishes….)  Also it is believed that if you wear red underwear on December 31st, you will have good luck with love in the new year. If you wear yellow underwear, you will have good luck in financial matters in the new year. And if you take your luggage out and walk around the block, travel will come to you in the new year!

In Ecuador ( left), they celebrate New Years Eve with the “anos viejos”, or old years, which are stuffed dummies made with paper and sawdust and fireworks – which are then burned. The dummies represent various local and international personalities that represent the passing year.  Children and women – and even some men dressed as women –  wear black and play the role of the old years widow and ask for money and candy in the street for the dummies funeral!

And in Brazil (below ) the Saint Silvester Road Race is the oldest and most prestigious street race in Brazil. For 80 years now, on December 31st, this marathon runs about 9 miles, but with the harsh weather conditions frequently leave runners with heat stroke and dehydration! – Oh yeah, sign me up, that’s how I want to spend my New Years Eve!

New Year’s Eve is marked by festive Fiesta de Iemanjá held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Crowds head to the beaches to offer flowers and gifts to Iemanjá, the Goddess of the Water in the Brazilian Umbanda religion. The Copacabana beach is flocked with millions of people who come to visualize the colorful candles floating on sea.

Gay Travel in Ireland and the 2008 Bingham Cup

If Rugby is your game, the Emerald Warriors are a gay rugby club in Dublin who will be happy to welcome visitors. JUNE 13-15th 2008, Dublin will host the BINGHAM CUP. According toIGRAB, “All of the bids reflected the great spirit that characterizes our organization,” said IGRAB chairman Raimundo Martinez. “After careful consideration by the IGRAB selection committee, it is my pleasure to announce that we will be drinking Guinness in 2008 in Dublin!” – The Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Rugby Tournament is the largest amateur 15s rugby event in the world.

For the past decade, Dublin has been coming into its own. The economic renaissance that began in the mid – 1900s and made Ireland a powerhouse among European economies, has transformed the city into a commercial and tourist showcase.

The classic picture of Ireland as a very religious and generally quite conservative country does not bode well for the gay traveller. Despite the high esteem for the poet Oscar Wilde, the actor Mícheál Mac Liammóir or the nationalist Roger Casement, homosexuals and especially gay men were not really Ireland’s favorite daughters and sons. Ireland today prides itself in being an inclusive, non-discriminatory society.

Ireland has a lively “gay scene”, especially in Dublin and Belfast. Some favorite hang-outs like the “George” in Dublin are clearly identifiable by their use of the “rainbow flag”, others are far more discreet. The best bet for visitors who want to meet other gay people is to obtain a copy of GCN, the Gay Community News, a monthly magazine with comprehensive listings. GO IRELAND, Dochara and    GAY IRELANDare also good resources.

Dublin is a very gay friendly city, in fact so integrated has the gay community become in the capital that there is little need to seek out fringe events or clubs, though there are plenty of gay bars and nightclubs to chose from. A good site to check in with before visiting Ireland is Dining Out which organises evening dinners for gay men about twice a month and is a very friendly group.

While Cork and Galway also have thriving gay scenes though with much less choice than Dublin, while Waterford is catching up. In other towns and cities you may not find exclusively or predominently gay venues but many are gay friendly.

Las Vegas becoming the New Los Angeles?

Las Vegas is becoming the star-studded playground, more and more every year!
Hollywood’s  young  A-listers like Paris Hilton, Sean Combs and Brad Pitt are hanging out here more and even buying condos and residences here.

The bankrupt
PLANET HOLLYWOOD has even resurfaced (in the old Aladdin Hotel) ! One hundred restaurants went belly up in 2001 and investers lost $1 billion. But Las Vegas could be different. Hip, modern, decidedly dramatic, and the centerpiece of the Las Vegas Strip, Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino is more than the newest hotel in town. It’s the shopping, dining and gambling destination of choice for the city that celebrates celebrity. And to show they mean business. Babs was hired (for a rumoured $1 million, for the grand opening a few weeks ago.)

Streisand performed at the grand opening of the new gambling and hotel complex, on the same stage where Pamela Anderson usually appears in Hans Klok’s weekend magic shows.(That show just closed by the way.)

A couple videos can be seen  HERE  and  HERE

Speaking of magician  HANS  KLOK, allegedly, he has been seen around town with Siegfried, and not Roy. Klok was in town this year with his show, but the show just closed, so he will be returning home to be with his longtime male companion. – But no worries, they (Klok and Siegfried)  are just friends we are told. In fact, it has been said Siegfried has been working on  plans for a new house, that would also include a small theatre room, so that perhaps they could entertain celebrity friends with some close-up magic!

More details when we know them!

By the way, one of my readers stated that Siegfried & Roy were actually married when they met on the Bremen cruise ship in Germany in 1960…..They were married by the Captian of the TS Bremen.

The reader even went so far as to say  that
in the Hall of European Vital Records is a marriage license between

Siegfried and Roy. Hmmmmm.  Interesting. Can anyone verify that?   I don’t know…..

David Beckham On Being a Gay Icon

Superstar Galaxy hottie, David Beckham recently confessed that his wife, Victoria, likes to dress him and that he loves being a gay icon.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio, the 32 year old blonde stud says “I’m very honoured to have the tag of gay icon…Maybe it’s things like (the fact) I like to look after myself, I like to look smart and presentable most of the time.”

He told the radio programme: “I always liked to look good, even when I was a little kid. I was given the option when I was a page boy once of either wearing a suit or wearing knickerbockers and long socks and ballet shoes – and I chose the ballet shoes and knickerbockers. It was a little bit strange at the time and my dad gave me a bit of stick – but I was happy.”

NEW YEARS EVE WITH PARIS & NICKY HILTON IN LAS VEGAS

WHAT ARE YOU DOING NEW YEARS EVE???

Celebutante PARIS HILTON  really, truly is trying to do some charitable work. Ever since her trip to Rwanda was postponed, Paris has been searching for a way to give back. Their mom Kathy Hilton has set up  KATHY HILTONS WISHING TREE on EBAY, to benefit the MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION. Philanthropist Kathy invited her family and friends to donate auction items this holiday season to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

For one week, all kinds of things were sold. Autographed goods from Liz Taylor, Tom Cruise, Dean Martin and more. One of the top items was round trip air fare for 2 to Las Vegas, a couple  nights at the Luxor Hotel, and hanging out with Nicky and Paris at their New Years Party they are throwing at the hot LAX  nightclub. The auction fetched  $4050.00  and 100% of the proceeds were donated.

In the news again this week, hotel heiress Paris Hilton’s potential inheritance dramatically diminished after her grandfather Barron Hilton re-announced plans to donate 97 percent of his $2.3 billion fortune to charity.
Jerry Oppenheimer, who profiled the Hilton family in his 2006 book “House of Hilton,” has said Barron Hilton is embarrassed by the behavior of his socialite granddaughter Paris and believes it has sullied the family name. –  Oh, please!

Paris isn’t exactly hurting. She has amassed a nice little fortune on her own and was recently on one of the stock channels discussing her business decisions and her strategies.

Prior to her New Years Party, she be watching fireworks from MANDOLAY BAY at a table that costs $20,000 for 8 people! And there is no food included with that! Just a couple bottles of DOM.  But it is supposed to be the place to view the Las Vegas fireworks disply! – Will her new boy toy Swedish pretty boy 22 year old Alexander von Zweigbergk Vaggo, aka pizza boy/model Alex Vaggo  be there?  Probably. The two have been seen EVERYWHERE together the last 6 weeks!

World’s First Gay Island …Sort Of

Heading out on a gay cruise was already a bit yesterday when Aussie company AllGayCruises started up earlier this year, but now they’ve taken things to the next level. The company’s now creating Australia’s first gay island.

Strictly speaking, the island already exists–it’s Lindeman Island off the Queensland coast–and it will only be gay for a week. But it sounds like it’ll be a particularly colorful event. For six days immediately following the Sydney Mardi Gras in March 2008 (post Mardi Gras March 4- 9), AllGayCruises has basically rented out the whole of Lindeman Island for a massive gay party. –  690 hectares of World Heritage National Parkland, off the Great Barrier Reef!

Seven big dance parties, a swimwear model contest, comedy nights and even the Gaylimpics will make sure that the fun really doesn’t stop on Lindeman. You can already book accommodation, meal and party packages starting at A$1,299 per person ($1,150). Btw, the whole event is called Shipwrecked!, which we hope is not a bad sign of things to come.

“This special week of an All Gay, all inclusive Tropical Island resort for 6 days & 5 nights is designed to create the perfect tropical Island holiday in a welcoming gay & lesbian environment. Get ready for a week filled with world-class sports, endless activities, and exciting entertainment. Whether it’s water sports, bushwalking, or sipping cocktails by the pool, we’ve got it all!”

Lance Bass Interview- Advocates 1000th Issue

Lance Bass is featured on The Advocate‘s landmark 1000th issue. In the cover story, Bass discusses what he perceives as the gay community’s love/hate relationship with him (discerned mainly via the comments left on gay blogs) He also talks about his training for space and the various relationships he’s had since coming out.

Bass attributes much of the vitriol directed at him to remarks he made in his People magazine coming out article, in which he called himself “a straight-acting gay” and chalks the comment up to naïveté.

Says Bass to the magazine: “You know, every community is hard to please. Our community is very fickle. It’s a touchy community because it’s the last civil rights movement we have left here in America. So when someone new like myself comes along and says off-the-mark things, yeah, I can see how people would get pissed…When most people come out, they deal with it out of the public eye, and they start getting educated about it. Me, I had 24 hours to say what I had to say on a subject that I had no clue about… It was a very normal phrase among my circle of friends—and they’d always say, ‘You’re such a SAG’—a straight-acting gay.

So I reveal that to People magazine, and it looks like I created this phrase and [that] I’m trying to start this movement that you should be straight-acting if you’re gay. It’s just dumb!…I knew last year that when I came out, if I said, ‘OK, I’m going to lead every parade and I’m going to speak at every engagement,’ half of the community would say, ‘Screw you! Who are you to come out and start speaking for every-one?’ That’s why I held back and was like, OK, I said my piece now; I’m just gonna lay back and get way more educated about myself, about the community, and not pretend I know what I’m talking about.'”

Bass says that although some may criticize him because he remained closeted for so long, he plans to look the other way and forge ahead with a project that addresses just that subject: “The music business says you can’t be openly gay and be successful, which I think is crap. I want to go out and search for a musical act, develop them, make their first album, everything—and all that time they’re openly gay.”

Bass can currently be seen in the NYC broadway hit Hairspray. Since breaking up with Reichen Lehmkuhl  last year, he has been spotted with hairstylist Ben Thigpen and fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez.

World’s First Condo-Hotel for the Gay Community Opens in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Excited crowds turned out Saturday for the inauguration of The Private Residences at Casa Cupula, the worlds first fractional condo-hotel developed exclusively for the gay community. As noted last weekend by the New York Times Travel section: Puerto Vallarta is becoming gayer by the year and [taking over] as Mexicos leading gay beach. Dozens of new and innovative gay-owned businesses in the Romantic Zone are being enjoyed by tourists of all stripes. Now this innovative new project plants the seeds for a new form of vacation home ownership, which resonates with many gay professionals.

Casa Cupula has employed a successful formula combining the services and amenities of a fine boutique hotel resort with the ambience and warmth of a gay guesthouse.  Named as one of the world’s “Top 5 Most Luxurious” gay guesthouses by Gay.com, “over 97% of our guests tell us they would return to Casa Cupula.”

High end hotels such as The Four Seasons and The Ritz Carlton are creating luxury fractional ownership projects worldwide, and now Casa Cupula is doing the same for gay vacationers. Having established a reputation as one of the leading luxury gay resorts in the world since its inception in 2002, Casa Cupula is responding to a real need from guests: We have many guests who have purchased homes and condos in Puerto Vallarta after staying with us, said developer Don Pickens, founder, Milagro Properties, but they regretted having to trade off Casa Cupulas ambience and services because they wanted to buy real estate. Now we can offer the best of both worlds.

The Private Residences at Casa Cupula has also found success with an unexpected audience: younger gay professionals. Many gay people in the US live in or near major cities, where the cost of buying a first home has grown out of reach for many young buyers. Twenty-seven year old San Francisco resident and financial planner Mike Gregg, an early buyer, recounted, Buying into real estate in the Bay Area is out of reach for me, even on a professional salary. So I chose to make my first investment at Casa Cupula. I know Ill use the vacation time, and when I cant, theyll manage it and rent it out for me. With rental income offsetting the costs, it can work out to a free vacation each year. And I still get the chance for capital appreciation.

Often confused with timeshares, which are usually time-limited usage contracts, fractional interests offer fully deeded ownership in perpetuity in four-week periods. With a minimal capital investment buyers still own part of a luxury home of the highest quality.

Project Runway Shocker! Steven Rosengard Booted and Jack Mackenroth Leaves The Show

OMG!  OUR  GBF  IS  VOTED  OTS!
(gbf= gay best friend   ots=off the show!)

We were hanging out with our GBF, Steven Rosengard, last night at  local Chicago watering hole CREW, watching Project Runway as it aired live. He had given no clue he was to get the boot! Steven is really  a talented designer and was given a very tough tough challenge. What can you do with poly-satin and lace? We were disappointed to see him leave the show, but know he has a great future ahead of him!

OUTZONE asked Steven, “Does being on the show, get you laid more?” – To which he said,
You know, in a perfect world, it would. I have never had so little sex as the
last four weeks. It’s just crazy. … It feels like I get to eight parties every
seven days. And it’s just nuts. And maybe part of it is just me going, “Oh I
gotta keep a low profile.” Because God only knows what the tabloids are ever
going to pick up if they ever care what anyone’s doing in Chicago (which I
highly doubt). Can you imagine? “It’s cold there and some guy’s screwing his way
through the Northside!”

Taking his inspiration from the greats of Hollywood’s Golden Age — Katherine
Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, Doris Day and Lauren Bacall — Steven brings a
simple, yet elegant, perspective to women’s day wear. Steven currently has a dress available at GAGAS,  and a  t-shirt at the Bravo Store .

And Jack Mackenroth – what a shocker that was! Jack’s doctor had advised him to leave the show and seek immediate treatment for the super-strong staph infection he came down with. The Seattle-born contestant actually wound up in a hospital for
several days for treatment with strong antibiotics. Reached by phone last night, Mackenroth emphasized that the infection was not
related to his HIV. Moreover, he says he’s fine now.

“I would like to reiterate that that was taped months ago and I was in the
hospital for a few days, but I made a complete recovery,” he said. “Any one can
get [ MRSA]. It’s not an HIV- related thing. It’s serious, so I took it seriously.”  –  Now, he says, “My health is great.”

On a side note, Jack has been dating Chicago’s Dale Levitskiof Top Chef fame. Great clothes and great food in that house! Plus they are both hotties! “It’s very baby steps. I really like him a lot. And geography is a bit of an
issue, but we’ll see where it goes. I like him a lot. I assume he likes me a
lot. Unless he’s lying…(laughter)… He’s adorable. I like keeping it incestuous,
keep it in the Bravo family.”

Dale says, “Yeah, we randomly met over Myspace. And then we bumped into each other at the OUT100 party and clicked. He’s hilarious. We’re just gonna roll with it and see what happens. And he’s cute as %&#@. We have the same sense of humor.”

Puerto Vallarta Mexico Latin Fever and Vallarta Fever

Club Manana (the hottest gay club in Puerto Vallarta) launched Vallarta Fever in association with Naked Sword. It was a great week of parties with lots of great entertainment, porn stars, and hot men!

Diana’s Gay Cruise. WHAT A GREAT TIME! Now in her 8th year she offers cruises 10am-5pm one or two days  a week, depending on the season.  $75, continental breakfast, snacks, unlimited beer and open bar (national brands), lunch on shore with a beer or beverage and snorkeling at several different stops throughout the day. It was a great day, a Thanksgiving Day to remember for sure, a beautiful tour of PV’s waterfront and Diana and her staff were awesome! – She just started a Monday night sunset cruise as well. Well worth checking out.

Cafe’ des Artistes. This renowned cafe claims to be “one of the best restaurants in the world” and has the reviews to support that notion. Chef Thierry Blouet was recently named a Maitre Cuisenaire de France. The menu changes seasonally; a recent offering included grilled lamb chops cooked with local spices and balsamic vinegar, served with a garlic creme brulee. The desserts are also extraordinary. The self-described dress code is “dressy to casual,” but you may wish to dress up a bit. The patio is gorgeous and romantic – if you can get a seat out there!

While in Vallarta, someone had told us about  this restaurant called  EL ARRAYAN. They have been voted Best Mexican In Vallarta three years in a row  by Frommers Guide. And they serve RAICILLA. Raicilla, pronounced “rye-see-ya”, is the local moon shine. It is distilled in crude, primitive stills from a fermented mash made from the roots ( raicilla means “little root” ) of the maguey plant and usually more than 100 proof. Since it is produced without government license, and sold without government tax, it is illegal in the same sense that moonshine is illegal in the United States. Its production is one of the traditional local arts, and it is found only in this area.

CIRQUE ZUMANITY ACCIDENT IN LAS VEGAS ALA SIEGFRIED AND ROY

Audience members watched in horror Tuesday night as two performers fell 15 to 35 feet during a “Zumanity” show at New York-New York.

One of the Cirque du Soleil performers injured in the fall, a woman, remained at University Medical Center’s intensive care unit in critical condition on Wednesday. The other, a “little person” named Alan Jose Silva, was treated for minor injuries Tuesday night and released from the hospital, said Anita Nelving, spokeswoman for Cirque du Soleil.

While details of the accident varied slightly from witness to witness, one consistent comment was that the audience was aghast.

Lisa from Michigan said, “I was at this show, sitting in the balcony and saw the whole thing unfold. It was disturbing on many levels. First, they were swinging, climbing, and finally dropping from slippery white satin panels. There were no invisible ropes, no nets, not even a cushioned mats or padding below to act as a barrier and to prevent this type of accident from occurring. I cannot believe the irresponsibility of Cirque to allow their performers to take these risks.

When they dropped from 30 feet high, the dwarf, Alan Silva was descending vertically. He is a very muscular man and I believe the combination of his physique and the manner in which he fell, saved his life. The woman was upside down when she fell, and as she dropped, she became horizontal when she hit the stage. Both lost consciousness for a few minutes. I thought they were both dead until I could see Alan’s chest move with quick shallow breaths. They both laid motionless until appearing to regain consciousness approximately 5-10 minutes after impact. When she woke, she moaned quietly as she laid on stage surrounded by 5-6 others who came rushing to their side from back stage when they realized what had happened.”

A magician once told me that his most important rule is to never do a trick on stage that is more dangerous to perform than the audience realizes. In fact, magic works on the opposite principal: Things are meant to look dangerous while being perfectly safe. Siegfried & Roy are the most famous example of violating this obvious rule. I don’t think anyone understood before the mauling of Roy that it really was only Roy’s magic protecting him from attack each show and that those lions, as is standard now, had no tether or other restraint to keep them out of the audience beyond predictability, instinct and Roy.

But in the world of acrobatics things are exactly as dangerous as they look.

Life is a Drag in Jerusalem – The one and only gay bar closes

Shushan was also the target of violence. It was seriously damaged in an arson attack two years ago, though no one was injured. The result, patrons say, was that its clientele became closer knit. Now they are struggling to find other clubs.
